GWC Marks Global Recycling Day with Sustainability Success

Doha, Qatar – Gulf Warehousing Company (GWC), a leading logistics provider, celebrated Global Recycling Day by showcasing the success of its groundbreaking sustainability project. The company’s Biobin initiative has set new standards for food waste recycling and circular economy practices in Qatar.

In 2024, the Biobin initiative processed nearly 100 tons of food waste across GWC sites. It converted almost 40 tons into nutrient-rich compost, enough to cover 14 FIFA football pitches. The compost is donated to local agricultural projects, including Education City Micro Farm, which teaches children gardening skills and promotes sustainable farming.

GWC continues to lead in waste management and recycling. Last year alone, the company recycled over 2,200 tons of waste. With a goal to cut waste by 20% by 2030, GWC is committed to reducing landfill use and supporting Qatar National Vision 2030.

Matthew Kearns, Acting Group CEO of GWC, highlighted the impact of the Biobin initiative. “This project shows our commitment to a sustainable future. By closing the loop on food waste, we help local agriculture and contribute to national development goals.”

Vicky Damalou, Co-Founder of Hadiqaa, praised the initiative’s benefits. “The high-quality compost has improved our soil, leading to healthier crops. This partnership proves how sustainability and community-driven efforts create lasting change.”

Eugene de Jongh, Managing Partner of Agricompost, emphasized the collaboration’s role in food security. “The compost enriches Qatar’s soil, making local farming more productive and sustainable.”

Beyond food waste recycling, GWC is advancing multiple sustainability projects. These include a sewage treatment plant at Bu Sulba Warehousing Park, which recycles wastewater for irrigation. The company also repurposes 50 tons of wooden pallets monthly, turning them into materials for farms, stables, and fire-starting products.

On Global Recycling Day (March 18), GWC reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability. The company plans to expand its green initiatives, paving the way for a more resilient and environmentally responsible future in Qatar.
