UTAS Students Innovate Drone-Based Solar Panel Inspection

A team of students from the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) in Shinas has developed drone panel defect detection technology. This system uses drones with thermal cameras to quickly spot defects in solar panels. As a result, it improves the efficiency and reliability of solar power systems.

The technology detects defects caused by environmental, electrical, or mechanical stress. Specifically, drones equipped with high-resolution thermal cameras capture images of solar panels. The system then analyzes these images using deep learning techniques. Consequently, this method identifies defects accurately and efficiently. Moreover, it provides a faster alternative to traditional inspections.

The team received recognition for their work. They won awards at both local and Gulf-level competitions. Additionally, they also presented the technology at scientific conferences. Fatima bint Mohammed Al Maamari, one of the team members, said their goal was to develop a faster, more accurate way to detect defects in solar panels.

The detection process starts when the drones capture images of solar panels. Afterward, the system enhances these images by adjusting contrast and filtering out irrelevant details. This process makes it easier to detect defects. Moreover, the students focused on reducing detection time and increasing efficiency.

In testing, the team used solar panels at the university to evaluate the system. Furthermore, Mahra bint Saeed Al Kaabi, another team member, explained how they fine-tuned the system for real-world conditions. In the end, the final prototype performed well and accurately detected defects.

This technology could change how solar panels are maintained. In particular, drone panel defect detection will help improve the reliability and cost-effectiveness of solar energy systems. Ultimately, the students’ work demonstrates how drones can enhance solar energy sustainability.
