Weight Loss Key to Beating Type 2 Diabetes, Study Shows

A groundbreaking study from Aman Hospital and Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) confirms that weight loss plays a crucial role in reversing type 2 diabetes. The research, published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, reveals that shedding extra weight significantly boosts the chances of diabetes recovery.

With diabetes cases rising worldwide, this study offers new hope. More than 537 million adults suffer from this condition, which increases the risk of heart disease and other complications. Managing diabetes is costly and affects quality of life, but experts now emphasize that weight loss can change everything.

The study analyzed global data from randomized controlled trials. Researchers found that for every one percent of weight lost, the likelihood of diabetes recovery increased by two percent. For example, people who lost 20 percent of their body weight had over a 40 percent chance of reversing diabetes.

“Weight loss plays a crucial role in reversing type 2 diabetes,” said Dr. Sarah Kanbour, lead author and endocrinology consultant at Aman Hospital. She explained that those who lost more than 30 percent of their weight had a 79 percent chance of full recovery.

Even if complete recovery isn’t achieved, losing weight improves blood sugar control. This reduces the risk of serious complications and improves overall health.

Dr. Laith Abu-Raddad, senior author and professor at WCM-Q, said the findings provide a powerful way to fight the diabetes epidemic. He emphasized that effective weight loss treatments, including medications, can help more people recover. However, making these treatments accessible and affordable remains a challenge.

Dr. Hussain Ismaeel of Aman Hospital highlighted how this study transforms diabetes care. “Weight loss plays a crucial role in reversing type 2 diabetes,” he stressed. He encouraged healthcare providers to prioritize weight management as a key strategy for better health outcomes.

The research was funded by Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar and the Qatar National Research Fund. Experts believe this discovery could change diabetes treatment worldwide.
