Bahrain European Business Hub Gains Momentum

Bahrain’s European business hub ambitions gained momentum following the launch of the European Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain. The new organization aims to strengthen trade, attract investment, and connect European companies with opportunities across the Gulf.

European Union Ambassador Christophe Farnaud said Bahrain offers significant potential for closer commercial relations. He highlighted the country’s open economy and its established role supporting European businesses operating throughout the region. Consequently, he believes Bahrain can attract further European investment and strengthen its position as a regional business centre.

Farnaud made these remarks during the chamber’s official launch reception on Wednesday evening. German Ambassador Henning Simon co-hosted the event, which marked a new step in Bahrain–Europe economic cooperation. The gathering brought together officials and business representatives interested in expanding commercial relationships.

The European Union has supported the development of European chambers in markets worldwide. According to Farnaud, these organizations help businesses present a unified voice on important commercial issues. Furthermore, they provide a channel for sharing business concerns during discussions between governments.

Farnaud also serves as the EU ambassador to Saudi Arabia and Oman. His diplomatic career has included assignments in Jordan and Egypt. He previously held a senior position overseeing Middle East and North Africa affairs at France’s foreign ministry.

The Bahrain chamber becomes the second European chamber established in the Gulf, following Saudi Arabia’s organization. Its launch reflects European interest in strengthening commercial engagement across the region. Moreover, it offers businesses a dedicated platform for identifying shared priorities and developing partnerships.

ECBH Chairman Nawaf Al Zayani described the launch as an opportunity to deepen business relations between Bahrain and Europe. He said the chamber intends to connect companies, encourage partnerships, and support European commercial activity in Bahrain. Therefore, its priorities will include practical services that respond to members’ needs.

Al Zayani also highlighted the need for a central platform to coordinate European business interests. Previously, companies lacked a single point of contact for connecting with potential partners and facilitating commercial development. The new chamber aims to address this gap through stronger coordination and communication.

General Manager Sherine Fakoussa said the organization would focus on converting its network into measurable business opportunities. She emphasized partnerships as a central part of its work. Accordingly, the chamber plans to collaborate with European companies, Bahraini institutions, and international partners.

The organization will work alongside the EU delegation, European embassies, government institutions, and business groups. Rather than replacing existing initiatives, it intends to complement their efforts. This approach could improve coordination and support closer economic ties between Bahrain and European markets.

Following the launch, the chamber plans to expand its membership and develop services for participating businesses. It will also establish a sustainable foundation for long-term growth. These steps should help the organization build its network and demonstrate practical value to members.

Bahrain’s European business hub ambitions also connect with broader discussions about trade and regional cooperation. Key priorities include a potential Strategic Partnership Agreement between Bahrain and the European Union. Progress towards an EU–GCC Free Trade Agreement also remains an important issue for businesses seeking wider market access.

Officials are also preparing for the EU–GCC Summit scheduled for October 24 in Riyadh. The meeting is expected to address economic and security frameworks affecting relations between Europe and Gulf countries. Consequently, closer business coordination could complement wider efforts to strengthen regional partnerships.

The chamber’s longer-term impact will depend on its ability to connect companies with genuine opportunities. Effective services, active membership, and sustained cooperation will therefore remain essential. If it delivers on these priorities, the organization could help Bahrain attract investment and deepen its commercial links with Europe.
