Iraq Moves Toward New Government as Businessman Ali al-Zaidi Nominated for Prime Minister

The latest phase of Iraq government formation advanced on Monday after the ruling Shiite Coordination Framework selected businessman Ali al-Zaidi as its nominee for prime minister. The decision followed a series of political meetings in Baghdad aimed at breaking a prolonged deadlock over the country’s top executive post. The nominee now faces the task of forming a cabinet within 30 days and securing parliamentary approval.

The Coordination Framework reached the decision after internal discussions involving key political figures, including outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani and State of Law Coalition leader Nouri al-Maliki. According to statements from Sudani, the group submitted al-Zaidi’s name after failing to reach consensus on other candidates. He confirmed that leaders unanimously accepted the proposal during their meeting.

Officials described the decision as an attempt to move past weeks of stalled negotiations. The Coordination Framework later issued a statement confirming the selection and reviewing the outgoing government’s performance. Leaders characterized the meeting as a step toward maintaining state continuity during a sensitive political transition.

The nomination comes after multiple rounds of talks failed to produce agreement on a candidate. Political factions reportedly held at least seven meetings without reaching a final decision. A scheduled meeting over the weekend faced delays, further extending the timeline for the Iraq government formation process beyond expected constitutional limits.

Ali al-Zaidi enters the nomination process with a background in finance and business. He holds a master’s degree in Finance and Banking. He currently manages several business and media interests, including leadership roles in banking, television, and retail operations in Baghdad.

His portfolio includes serving as director of an Islamic bank and overseeing a television network. He also chairs a private university described as Iraq’s first digital institution. In addition, he plays a role in distributing public ration cards through the Ministry of Trade, according to official records.

However, some of his business activities have drawn international attention. One of the financial institutions linked to him has faced sanctions in recent years over allegations involving financial misconduct and currency-related violations. These concerns add complexity to the ongoing Iraq government formation discussions.

Political observers note that the nomination reflects continued efforts by major blocs to consolidate agreement after prolonged negotiations. The selection process also highlights the influence of established political alliances in shaping leadership outcomes.

The nominee now faces a critical constitutional deadline. He must present a full cabinet list to parliament within 30 days. Lawmakers will then decide whether to approve the proposed government or request further revisions.

As Iraq enters this decisive stage, the outcome of the Iraq government formation process will shape the country’s political direction in the coming period. Leaders continue to emphasize the need for stability and consensus as they move toward finalizing the new administration.
