Kuwait Condemns Basra Consulate Attack, Demands Accountability

Kuwait condemns Basra consulate attack after protesters stormed its diplomatic mission in southern Iraq. The incident caused widespread concern regionally and internationally.

Kuwait summoned Iraq’s chargé d’affaires to deliver an official note of protest. Authorities called the assault a flagrant violation of international norms. They stressed urgent action to hold perpetrators accountable.

Acting Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Aziz Al-Daihani emphasized that Iraq must prevent similar incidents in the future. He also underlined the need for stronger protection of Kuwaiti diplomatic missions. Furthermore, he warned that continued violations could harm bilateral relations.

The attack occurred after rockets hit a nearby house in Khor Al-Zubair, killing three and injuring five people. Protesters then stormed the Kuwaiti consulate, prompting Iraqi security forces to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Iraq’s foreign ministry quickly condemned the attack and established an investigative committee. The committee, led by the interior ministry, aims to determine responsibility and ensure legal action against the perpetrators. Senior Iraqi figures, including former parliament speaker Mohammed Al-Halbousi, also denounced the assault.

Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani described the attack as a violation of international law. He urged federal authorities to hold those responsible accountable and prevent repeated assaults on diplomatic missions.

The Gulf Cooperation Council expressed full solidarity with Kuwait. Secretary-General Jasem Al-Budaiwi called for immediate measures to bring offenders to justice. Additionally, several Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Jordan, and Egypt, issued strong condemnation statements.

Egypt linked the consulate attack to broader regional tensions. It condemned recent assaults on energy and civilian infrastructure across the Gulf. At the same time, it expressed hope that a recently announced pause in military operations would lead to lasting peace.

International organizations, including the Arab League, Arab Parliament, and Muslim World League, also denounced the attack. They emphasized that assaults on diplomatic missions constitute serious violations of international law.

Kuwait condemns Basra consulate attack highlights the country’s commitment to upholding diplomatic protections. Moreover, it shows Kuwait’s determination to safeguard its missions abroad and reinforce regional security.
