Kurdistan and France Push for De-escalation in Syria Amid Rising Tensions

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed the ongoing crisis in Syria on Saturday. From the start, Kurdistan-France Syria de-escalation efforts show cased both countries’ commitment to ending clashes and stabilizing the region.

During the phone call, both leaders expressed deep concern over ongoing fighting between the Syrian army and Kurdish-led forces. They urged all parties to reduce tensions immediately and to avoid further escalation. Consequently, the conversation reinforced the need for a ceasefire in conflict-affected areas.

Barzani and Macron also reaffirmed support for the March 2025 agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the interim government in Damascus. This deal remains crucial to integrating Kurdish forces into Syrian state structures while respecting local governance. Furthermore, both leaders emphasized the importance of honoring commitments made under international mediation efforts.

The call coincided with a critical meeting in Erbil, where US Special Envoy Tom Barrack met with Kurdish leaders from the Region and northeast Syria (Rojava). President Masoud Barzani hosted the discussions, which aimed to advance a peaceful resolution. As a result, both local and international stakeholders signaled stronger coordination to resolve the conflict.

Macron praised Barzani’s mediation efforts and acknowledged his work to calm tensions in Syria. In response, Barzani stressed that the rights of the Kurdish people must be protected in Syria’s future constitution. These points underscored the political and humanitarian dimensions of the ongoing conflict.

According to Elysee Palace, both presidents expressed support for resuming talks on integrating the SDF into the Syrian state as agreed in March 2025. They called for finalizing discussions quickly to reinforce Syrian unity, stability, and governance structures. At the same time, they urged immediate measures to prevent further civilian harm.

Kurdistan-France Syria de-escalation efforts also reflect a broader commitment to international collaboration. Both governments are actively involved in monitoring the conflict, supporting humanitarian needs, and encouraging diplomatic solutions. Consequently, these efforts strengthen regional security and reduce risks of prolonged instability.

By coordinating political dialogue, military integration, and humanitarian support, Kurdistan and France aim to prevent escalation and build lasting peace. Ultimately, Kurdistan-France Syria de-escalation efforts mark a significant step toward stabilizing northern Syria while protecting Kurdish interests.
