MDO and PDO Partner for Mineral Extraction from Produced Water

Minerals Development Oman (MDO) has unveiled an innovative collaboration with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) to extract valuable minerals from produced water associated with oil wells. This groundbreaking research and development initiative promises to unlock new resources from an often-overlooked byproduct of oil extraction.

The partnership will initially focus on extracting salt and bromine from the produced water, which is a byproduct of oil production. As the project progresses, both MDO and PDO aim to expand their efforts to recover additional minerals, including lithium and other key elements that could play a significant role in future industries.

According to Jamal Al Mandhri, the Business Development Manager at MDO, this partnership marks a significant step in utilizing produced water more effectively. Al Mandhri emphasized that the project is aligned with the growing demand for sustainable and innovative methods in the energy and mining sectors. By tapping into this resource, MDO and PDO will contribute to diversifying the country’s mineral portfolio while also offering environmental benefits.

Moreover, the initiative aims to reduce the environmental footprint of produced water disposal. Traditionally, produced water has posed challenges in terms of its management and disposal. However, by extracting valuable minerals, both companies hope to mitigate the environmental impact of this waste product. This initiative represents a win-win scenario, as it not only reduces the environmental burden but also creates opportunities for economic growth by adding new value to an existing resource.

The collaboration between MDO and PDO underscores the importance of innovation in Oman’s energy and mining sectors. It also highlights the country’s commitment to sustainable resource management. With plans to expand the scope of mineral extraction in the future, this project could potentially lead to significant advancements in both the energy and mineral industries.

As MDO and PDO continue to work together on this ambitious initiative, the potential for further breakthroughs in mineral extraction from produced water remains high, paving the way for a more sustainable and diversified resource economy in Oman.
