Saudi-Led Coalition Strikes in Yemen After STC Leader Flees, Escalating Tensions

Saudi Arabia has launched airstrikes in Yemen, emphasizing a strong Saudi military intervention in the south. The strikes targeted forces linked to the Southern Transitional Council after its leader, Aidarous al-Zubaidi, fled before heading to Riyadh for peace talks. The incident shows Saudi Arabia’s determination to stabilize Yemen and prevent conflict escalation.

Al-Zubaidi skipped scheduled talks in Riyadh and moved to an unknown location. Authorities tracked his movements and learned he mobilized armored vehicles, combat units, and weapons. Moreover, the Saudi-led coalition responded at 4 a.m. local time with preemptive strikes to halt the threat and protect peace efforts.

The Southern Transitional Council, which once supported Yemen’s internationally recognized government against Houthi rebels, recently advanced into southern provinces. They seized control of Hadramout and Mahra despite warnings from Riyadh. These provinces border Saudi Arabia, making security there a top priority. The recent escalation forced Saudi Arabia to act quickly to maintain regional stability.

The coalition disrupted the STC’s planned offensive and reinforced support for Yemen’s recognized government. Riyadh also backed the government’s call for Emirati forces to withdraw, following claims of a weapons shipment to Mukalla port. Coalition forces worked closely with local authorities, showing how the Saudi military intervention aims to curb separatist threats effectively.

Officials said the strikes aim to prevent chaos while encouraging peace talks. After the airstrikes, most STC delegates left for Riyadh, except al-Zubaidi. The Yemeni government removed him from the Presidential Leadership Council for alleged treason and asked the Attorney General to pursue legal action.

Analysts say the operation shows Riyadh’s readiness to act decisively in Yemen. It also highlights Saudi Arabia’s dual role as a military actor and mediator. The Saudi military intervention continues to shape southern Yemen’s political landscape and may influence upcoming negotiations.

Overall, the strikes reflect Saudi Arabia’s focus on securing key provinces. The coalition balances military action with diplomacy to maintain stability and prevent conflict escalation in the south.
