Oman has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 33% by 2035 under its latest national climate plan, reinforcing the Sultanate’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and its long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The Environment Authority submitted the country’s third Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) report to the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), outlining climate policies and emissions reduction targets through 2035.
The report sets an unconditional target to cut emissions by 7% by 2035, with a further 26% reduction dependent on international financial support, technology transfer, technical assistance and capacity-building. Together, the measures could deliver a total emissions reduction of up to 33%.
Using 2024 as the baseline year, the report estimates Oman’s greenhouse gas emissions at around 93.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.
The strategy focuses on reducing emissions across key sectors, including energy, industry, agriculture, land use and waste management. Planned measures include expanding renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, supporting low-carbon industries, developing green hydrogen projects, promoting the circular economy and evaluating carbon capture technologies.
Alongside emissions reductions, the plan outlines measures to strengthen resilience against climate-related risks such as drought, extreme heat, tropical cyclones, floods and rising sea levels. Water resources, agriculture, fisheries, public health, tourism and infrastructure are among the priority sectors identified for adaptation efforts.
The Environment Authority said the report was prepared in coordination with government agencies, private sector partners and specialised institutions using national data and technical studies to support Oman’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
Officials said the updated climate plan is expected to improve transparency, encourage investment in green projects, attract climate finance and support the development of new sustainable industries while protecting communities and natural resources.
