Riyadh Takes Center Stage as Saudi Arabia Redefines Global Tourism Future

Saudi Arabia has captured worldwide attention as global tourism growth becomes the focus in Riyadh. The Kingdom is hosting the largest-ever UN Tourism General Assembly, celebrating 50 years of global cooperation in the travel industry.

The four-day event brought together over 150 countries, including ministers, tourism leaders, and experts. They gathered to discuss the future of travel, sustainability, and innovation — the driving forces behind global tourism growth.

Tourism Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb said the assembly comes at a defining moment for international collaboration. He emphasized that tourism drives both economic progress and social development while improving lives worldwide. Furthermore, he reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to stronger cooperation for sustainable global tourism growth.

Riyadh, known for combining tradition and modern ambition, perfectly represents the spirit of this gathering. Al-Khateeb highlighted that it is the first time the assembly has taken place in the Arabian Gulf, reflecting the region’s growing influence in global tourism.

He explained that Saudi Arabia’s commitment to tourism aligns with its Vision 2030 plan. The strategy aims to make tourism a key pillar of the economy while promoting culture, heritage, and innovation.

Tourism contributes over $11 trillion to the world economy and supports one in every ten jobs. However, Al-Khateeb said developing skilled workers is essential to meet the rising demand for 43 million new jobs by 2035.

In addition, he underlined the importance of technology and artificial intelligence in reshaping the industry. Saudi Arabia continues to invest in these fields to improve visitor experiences while keeping the human connection that defines travel.

Social inclusion remains a major priority. The Kingdom is working to empower women, support local communities, and preserve cultural and environmental treasures. These efforts ensure that tourism remains both responsible and beneficial for future generations.

UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili praised Saudi Arabia’s leadership. He noted that the introduction of the e-visa revolutionized accessibility and boosted international arrivals. Moreover, he stressed that unity among nations is key to a sustainable and inclusive tourism future.

As the assembly marks 50 years of UN Tourism, the message from Riyadh is clear. With ambition, innovation, and cooperation, global tourism growth can create a more connected and prosperous world.
