Emirates Suspends Dar es Salaam Flights as Civil Unrest Grips Tanzania

Emirates Airlines has announced the suspension of its flights to and from Dar es Salaam due to ongoing civil unrest in Tanzania’s commercial capital. The airline stated that passenger safety remains its top priority as it continues to monitor the situation closely. The Emirates flight suspension will remain in effect until at least November 4, depending on ground conditions.

Starting October 31, the airline halted 10 flights — five departing from Dubai and five returning from Dar es Salaam. This move comes as protests and demonstrations intensify across Tanzania, disrupting normal travel and business operations. The Emirates flight suspension affects many travelers, particularly those connecting through Dubai to reach Tanzania’s beaches and safari destinations.

In an official statement, Emirates expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and advised passengers to stay updated through official channels. The airline encouraged customers who booked directly to manage their bookings online or contact customer service for rebooking options. Those who purchased tickets through travel agencies were also advised to seek assistance there.

Emirates announced that it will stop travelers with connecting flights to Dar es Salaam from boarding at their original departure point until further notice. This measure ensures smooth coordination during the Emirates flight suspension period and minimizes disruption to the airline’s broader network.

The protests in Tanzania reportedly began after major political opposition figures were excluded from the presidential race. Demonstrators accused the government of tightening restrictions and repressing dissent. The unrest spread rapidly through Dar es Salaam and other cities, prompting safety concerns for both residents and international visitors.

Despite the suspension in Tanzania, Emirates also announced the resumption of flights to Madagascar’s capital, Antananarivo, after several weeks of disruption. Starting October 23, flights EK707 and EK708 resumed operations as stability returned to the island nation. This decision reflects the airline’s readiness to restore normal services once safety conditions improve.

Dar es Salaam remains an important destination for both business and leisure travelers from the Gulf region. The ongoing unrest, however, poses significant challenges for tourism and trade between the UAE and Tanzania.

Emirates reaffirmed its commitment to passenger safety and transparent communication during operational disruptions. The airline continues to assess conditions in Tanzania and will resume flights once the situation allows for safe and reliable travel.
