Baghdad Launches Major Road Expansion to Ease Traffic Congestion

The Abu Nuwas Street expansion officially launched its first phase on Monday evening. As part of this effort, the project aims to reduce heavy traffic in Baghdad’s busiest areas and improve travel flow.

The first phase added a two-kilometer parallel road under the Suspended Bridge. Meanwhile, construction teams worked under difficult conditions to complete it quickly. Engineers managed high traffic while ensuring safety and quality. Their efforts received praise from city officials.

The complete project will stretch eight kilometers. Moreover, it will link Abu Nuwas Street from Al-Karrada Martyrs Park to Eagles Square on the Karkh side. Once finished, it will significantly improve commute times and traffic safety.

The city’s development plan, called “Baghdad is More Beautiful,” includes multiple street upgrades. In addition, the plan opens new traffic corridors and modernizes vital streets. Officials confirmed that coordination between planners, engineers, and city departments was crucial to success.

Traffic authorities reported that the first phase is nearly ready for public use. Consequently, drivers will soon experience smoother travel along the newly expanded road. The project complements the upcoming fourth ring road, which will further reduce congestion in central Baghdad.

Residents and local businesses welcomed the changes. Furthermore, they expect the expansion to boost commerce and reduce daily travel stress. City planners say the road will improve urban mobility and enhance overall city life.

Finally, the Abu Nuwas Street expansion marks a major step toward solving Baghdad’s traffic issues. As a result, the project highlights the city’s commitment to modern infrastructure, smoother travel, and safer streets.
