The United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) for the Arabian Gulf and Kuwait hosted the Sports and Environmental Day for the diplomatic corps in Kuwait on Saturday. The event, “Kuwait Tazra,” was held under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. It was attended by prominent figures such as Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs Ambassador Sameeh Hayat, and Tajikistan Ambassador and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Kuwait Zubaydullo Zubaydzoda.
Dr. Ameera Al-Hassan, Head of the UN-Habitat Mission in Kuwait, highlighted that this event marked the celebration of Kuwait’s National Days and emphasized the environmental campaign’s dedication to raising awareness and promoting sustainable practices. Now in its seventh edition since its launch in 2019, the event seeks to engage all sectors of society in environmental efforts, with a focus on sustainable living.
During the event, participants took part in planting local tree species to contribute to expanding Kuwait’s green spaces and combating desertification. This initiative is closely aligned with the goal of supporting environmental initiatives and achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. It also reflects UN-Habitat’s vision of enhancing the role of public open spaces in fostering environmental consciousness.
Tajikistan’s Ambassador Zubaydullo Zubaydzoda expressed pride in seeing the diplomatic community come together for such a meaningful environmental cause. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between diplomatic missions and local organizations to advance sustainability efforts.
Mohammad Al-Basri, Manager of Public Relations and Information Group at Kuwait Oil Company (KOC), praised KOC’s vital role in supporting environmental initiatives. He noted that selecting the “Ahmadi Oasis” as the event venue was a testament to the company’s commitment to sustainability. The Ahmadi Oasis, which houses over 155,000 plants and trees, is a shining example of successful reforestation projects in desert areas. Al-Basri expressed hope that the event would encourage greater environmental awareness and promote a culture of tree planting within the community.
“Kuwait Tazra” continues to be one of the country’s most prominent initiatives, aimed at expanding green spaces and protecting the environment, serving as a significant contribution to sustainability efforts in Kuwait.
