Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Damascus on Monday, where he extended an invitation for the Syrian leader to visit the Kurdistan Region during talks focused on regional cooperation and stability.
Barzani arrived in the Syrian capital with an official delegation and was welcomed at Damascus International Airport by senior Syrian foreign ministry official Mohammed Taha Ahmed before holding talks with Sharaa at the presidential palace.
According to the Kurdistan Region Presidency, the meeting focused on relations between Syria, Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, as well as opportunities to expand cooperation and discuss recent developments across the region.
The Syrian presidency said the two leaders explored ways to strengthen coordination, particularly in the economic sector, while exchanging views on regional issues of mutual interest. The discussions also addressed efforts to support security, stability and broader regional cooperation.
Following the meeting, Barzani said Syria has a “historic opportunity” to rebuild and move towards a more stable future. In a statement shared on X, he expressed confidence in Sharaa’s leadership and said he believes the country can achieve greater prosperity and stability for all Syrians.
The visit comes as regional leaders continue diplomatic efforts aimed at strengthening dialogue and promoting cooperation amid ongoing political and security challenges across the Middle East.
