State of Law Endorses Nouri al-Maliki for Iraq’s Top Seat Ahead of Elections

The State of Law Alliance officially confirmed Nouri al-Maliki as its candidate for Iraq’s next prime minister. With elections approaching in November, this announcement signals a major political move.

First, the alliance highlights al-Maliki’s experience and proven leadership. Moreover, they see him as capable of guiding Iraq through complex challenges.

Alliance member Mohammed al-Shammari told Shafaq News that al-Maliki has the “experience and determination” to advance Iraq’s stability. Additionally, he predicted the coalition could win between 40 and 45 seats.

Historically, the State of Law Alliance has consistently nominated al-Maliki for premiership in every election cycle. Despite past controversies, they continue to view him as their strongest candidate.

However, al-Maliki’s tenure remains controversial. Critics point to sectarian tensions and policies linked to the rise of ISIS. Yet, his supporters stress that he provided structure and security during turbulent years.

The State of Law Alliance is rooted in the Dawa Party. It positions itself as a Shiite Islamist movement emphasizing law, order, and national unity. Furthermore, it is widely regarded as part of the pro-Iranian “Resistance Axis.”

In 2018, the coalition won 25 seats in the 329-member parliament. Most support came from Shiite-majority provinces such as Basra, Najaf, Maysan, and Al-Diwaniyah. By 2021, the alliance increased its tally to 34 seats, ranking third after the Sadrist Movement and the Sunni-led Taqaddum Coalition.

As November approaches, Iraq’s political competition intensifies. Consequently, the State of Law Alliance aims to unite its base and reinforce its political influence. With al-Maliki leading, the coalition hopes to regain its central role in shaping Iraq’s future.
