Qatar Sustainable Freight Can Cut CO2 by 2035

Qatar can achieve major CO2 reductions through sustainable freight initiatives across the country. The key phrase Qatar sustainable freight appears throughout this report. PwC Middle East released a report titled “Driving Change – The Future of Sustainable Heavy-Duty Trucks in the Middle East,” exploring the potential for decarbonizing road freight.

The study shows that without incentives, emissions from new trucks could exceed 54 million tonnes of CO2 by 2035. However, accelerated electrification, cleaner fuels, and shifts to other transport modes could reduce emissions by 4.7 percent. Therefore, sustainable freight strategies in Qatar could deliver meaningful environmental benefits.

The research finds that electric heavy-duty trucks remain limited across the GCC, with 70 percent fewer models than in Europe. Consequently, the country needs to expand supply, attract manufacturers, and scale zero-emission truck deployment. These steps are essential to make Qatar sustainable freight a practical and effective solution.

Globally, transport contributes around a quarter of carbon emissions, while medium- and heavy-duty vehicles account for 40 percent due to diesel dependence and heavy road use. In the Middle East, the urgency is greater, as UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar set ambitious electrification and clean transport targets. Consequently, sustainable road freight emerges as a strategic necessity.

Heiko Seitz, Global Transport and Logistics Leader at PwC Middle East, emphasized the importance of smart policy and investment. He said, “With the right incentives, zero-emission trucks can outperform combustion-engine vehicles both environmentally and commercially.” Therefore, the GCC, including Qatar, has the resources and ambition to lead the transition.

Qatar’s growing clean energy base and strong logistics infrastructure create an ideal environment for deploying sustainable freight. Additionally, investment in charging networks, fleet electrification, and workforce training will accelerate the transition. By combining these strategies, Qatar sustainable freight can significantly cut emissions while supporting commercial efficiency.

Moreover, cleaner fuels, modal shifts to rail or sea, and digital logistics solutions can further reduce CO2 from freight operations. These initiatives align with Qatar’s broader sustainability agenda and regional climate commitments. With coordinated action, sustainable freight can strengthen Qatar’s logistics sector and reduce environmental impact.

Overall, sustainable freight solutions present a clear path to cutting emissions, enhancing transport efficiency, and supporting the country’s climate goals. With policy, investment, and technological adoption, Qatar can lead the region in green freight transformation.
