Iraq’s Artawi Oilfield Set for Massive Expansion with ENKA and Sinopec

The Artawi oi lfield expansion is entering a new phase as Iraq accelerates energy development in the south. The Iraqi cabinet approved major contracts on Tuesday to boost production at this strategic oilfield. The decision reflects Iraq’s goal to strengthen its energy sector while attracting international investment.

Sinopec, one of the world’s largest energy companies, won the Networks and Well Platforms (NWP) tender for the field’s second phase. This contract will enhance infrastructure and drilling capacity. Meanwhile, Turkish construction and engineering firm ENKA received approval to develop the Artawi Central Processing Facility. This dual approach signals strong international cooperation in Iraq’s oil sector.

The Artawi oilfield, located near Basra, holds estimated reserves of 2.4 billion barrels of high-quality oil. Current output is around 60,000 barrels per day, but the government aims to triple this figure. Authorities expect production to reach nearly 210,000 barrels daily once the expansion is complete.

Iraqi Oil Minister Hayan Abdul-Ghani emphasized the field’s importance. He noted that the oilfield produces three different types of high-grade crude. The Artawi oilfield expansion will not only increase output but also improve Iraq’s energy reliability and economic strength.

In addition, the Artawi oilfield is part of the Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP), a $27 billion initiative with France-based TotalEnergies. This project focuses on utilizing associated gas from five Basra oilfields, including Artawi. A new gas processing plant, capable of handling 600 million cubic feet, will operate in two phases to maximize efficiency and reduce waste.

Analysts note that the Artawi oilfield expansion represents a broader strategy to integrate oil and gas production in Iraq. The project aims to attract foreign investors, create jobs, and modernize energy infrastructure. The collaboration between ENKA and Sinopec reflects growing confidence in Iraq’s energy policies.

Officials continue to monitor progress closely. They plan to meet project milestones in the coming months, ensuring both production and environmental standards are met. With these developments, Iraq positions itself as a leading energy hub in the Middle East.

The Artawi oilfield will play a critical role in Iraq’s long-term energy strategy. Its expansion promises significant economic returns while boosting regional energy stability. International partners and local authorities alike emphasize the project’s strategic importance and potential to transform Iraq’s oil industry.
