Lithuanian prosecutors have charged two foreign nationals with attempting to smuggle drug-laced paper to the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, following an investigation into an international drug trafficking operation.
The Prosecutor General’s Office said the suspects face charges of large-scale drug smuggling and illegal possession of narcotics with intent to distribute. The case has been referred to a court in Vilnius.
The investigation began in September 2025 after an employee at a parcel distribution terminal in Vilnius discovered a concealed compartment inside a shipment and alerted police.
According to investigators, the parcels, which had been handed to a courier by the suspects, were destined for the UAE and Bahrain.
Police later searched an apartment rented by the defendants and seized approximately 1.78 kilograms of various psychotropic substances.
Authorities allege the suspects used specialised equipment to impregnate A4 paper sheets with psychotropic substances before hiding the sheets inside specially built compartments within shipping boxes to avoid customs detection.
The two suspects remain in custody. If convicted, they face up to 18 years in prison for drug smuggling and up to 15 years for illegal possession of narcotics with intent to distribute.
