Document Preservation in Oman Strengthened by Archival Forum

Salalah hosted a three-day forum on archival experiences that placed strong focus on document preservation as a national priority. The event concluded with major recommendations, including unifying national strategies, improving training programs, and adopting advanced digital tools to safeguard records. These steps aim to ensure that documents remain an essential part of the country’s memory and development.

Organized by the National Records and Archives Authority, the forum took place at the Directorate General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar Governorate. Participants highlighted that document preservation requires both institutional cooperation and advanced methods of digitization. The gathering reflected Oman’s broader strategy to strengthen transparency, efficiency, and national identity through effective record management.

On the final day, three sessions provided insights into practical approaches. The first session addressed sorting processes, presenting mechanisms and real case studies from workplace experiences. Experts stressed that public document sorting represents a key stage in a record’s lifecycle. This process, they explained, establishes the foundation for accurate organization and long-term document preservation.

The second session focused on digitization and secure storage, featuring four institutional presentations. Representatives from Oman Airports described their efforts to build a dedicated document management center. Meanwhile, Nama Dhofar Services Company presented its initiative to link digital and physical preservation. In addition, Dhofar Municipality shared its file management efforts, and the Environment Agency outlined a secure preservation program. These examples showed how public entities align with the nation’s digital transformation and information security goals.

Furthermore, participants discussed the importance of continuous training and capacity-building to prepare staff for modern challenges. They highlighted the need to enhance technical expertise, especially in fields related to electronic records. By doing so, government and private institutions can safeguard national archives while supporting better governance.

Officials emphasized that document preservation goes beyond storage. It ensures that future generations access accurate records while protecting cultural and historical heritage. The forum concluded with a call for stronger cooperation between institutions to maintain efficiency and sustainability.

In summary, the Salalah forum highlighted that document preservation strengthens both governance and national identity. With unified strategies, digital innovation, and skilled human resources, Oman can ensure its records remain secure and sustainable.
