Iraq Boosts Oil Production: Exports from Kurdistan, Expansion in Kirkuk

Iraq boosts oil production through a series of strategic moves focused on Kurdistan and Kirkuk. Officials announced new steps to increase exports and expand northern oil capacity. These efforts reflect Iraq’s goal to strengthen national revenue sources.

A government delegation arrived in Kirkuk via military aircraft. During the visit, they launched a new project at the Jambur oil field to further boost production levels. The facility processes wet crude and improves output efficiency.. Additionally, officials revealed ongoing talks with Turkey about the export pipeline agreement.

The current agreement with Turkey remains valid until July 2026. However, authorities plan to reach a new deal before then. This would secure uninterrupted exports of oil from Iraq through the Ceyhan port.

Meanwhile, Iraq boosts oil production in Kurdistan. Active fields in the region currently produce about 130,000 barrels per day. Around 50,000 barrels serve domestic needs. The remaining 80,000 barrels will be exported through the Turkish pipeline. Officials confirmed that exports will resume today or tomorrow.

Expansion plans in Kirkuk are even more ambitious. Iraq aims to raise production capacity from 350,000 to 650,000 barrels per day as part of its strategy to boost national output. The Ministry of Oil is working closely with British energy giant BP to achieve this.

The North Gas Company shared updated production numbers with local media. The company outputs 380 million standard cubic feet of dry gas daily. It also produces 1,100 to 1,200 tons of LPG, 750 cubic meters of gasoline, and 120 tons of sulfur. These figures are expected to rise as infrastructure upgrades continue in support of Iraq’s oil production efforts.

Despite progress, challenges persist. Oil wells with more than 20% water content must shut down. This issue limits output and highlights technical barriers in the region.

To tackle this, the government also supports private investment. A major private refinery project is planned in Kirkuk to enhance production. The facility will increase local production of gasoline and other oil-based products.

Although Basra and southern Iraq remain key revenue drivers, the country is diversifying its energy sources. By focusing on the north, where efforts are underway, Iraq aims to boost oil production and secure long-term economic growth.
