Oman heritage landmarks have earned regional recognition following their registration in the Arab Register of Architectural and Urban Heritage. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism confirmed the inclusion of four historic sites during the 10th meeting of the Observatory of Architectural and Urban Heritage in Arab States. This meeting took place in Lebanon with participation from several Arab countries.
Specifically, the newly registered Oman heritage landmarks include Al Hamoudah Mosque in Jaalan Bani Bu Ali, Sohar Fort, Nizwa Fort, and Al Shawadhna Mosque. Their addition to the register reflects Oman’s commitment to cultural preservation and architectural heritage.
To begin with, Al Hamoudah Mosque, often called the “Domes Mosque,” is located in the South A’Sharqiyah Governorate. It stands among the oldest religious structures in the Wilayat of Jaalan Bani Bu Ali. Its domes and traditional design showcase classical Omani Islamic architecture.
In addition, Sohar Fort, situated in the North Al Batinah Governorate, also received recognition. This historic fortress has played a vital role in coastal defense and political administration. Its location and structure highlight the maritime legacy of the region.
Furthermore, Nizwa Fort, another key entry, remains one of the most prominent Oman heritage landmarks. It is found in the A’Dakhiliyah Governorate and represents centuries of Omani defensive and intellectual history. Historically, the fort served both as a knowledge center and a governance hub.
Similarly, Al Shawadhna Mosque in the village of Al Aqr, also in Nizwa, features a beautifully crafted gypsum mihrab. Its detailed architecture embodies religious heritage and highlights Oman’s craftsmanship in traditional building techniques.
Moreover, the Observatory of Architectural and Urban Heritage, under ALECSO, manages the heritage registry. It works to foster cooperation among Arab nations in conservation and documentation. The goal is to preserve historical sites that form part of shared cultural identity.
Therefore, Oman’s recognition underscores its efforts in heritage promotion and international engagement. These developments aim to support cultural tourism and sustainable development. The listing of these Oman heritage landmarks strengthens national pride and positions Oman as a guardian of historical architecture.
Ultimately, officials believe that preserving heritage opens doors for education and global cultural appreciation. It also promotes Oman as a destination where tradition meets modernity.
