Salalah tourism project efforts advanced on Monday with the foundation stone laid for a major development in the Junuf area. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism launched the initiative in partnership with Al-Wathba Hospitality Company. Officials estimate the investment at OMR80 million. This project forms part of a broader strategy to enhance tourism infrastructure in Dhofar Governorate.
The agreement follows a usufruct deal signed in February 2025. The location, known for its natural beauty, was selected for its strategic value. During the ceremony, officials unveiled promotional videos highlighting Dhofar’s attractions and the upcoming development features. The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for Tourism led the foundation ceremony.
The first phase will take 30 months to complete. It includes a five-star hotel with 124 units, a full-service marina, restaurants, cafes, and a beach club. Plans also include a health club and a central entrance gate to the integrated complex. Azzan Qasim Al Busaidi, Undersecretary for Tourism, emphasized the project’s national impact. He said it would support small and medium enterprises and generate both direct and indirect jobs.
In addition, the Salalah tourism project will offer training programs in hospitality for Omani citizens. These initiatives align with national goals to boost local employment and develop specialized skills. Al Busaidi also highlighted Dhofar’s natural and environmental diversity. He explained that tourism developments like this are vital for Oman’s economic diversification.
On his part, Khalid Abdullah Al Abri, Director General of Heritage and Tourism in Dhofar, described the project as one of the largest in the region. He noted its investment scale and the variety of components involved. Moreover, he confirmed that the yacht marina would be among Oman’s largest. He also emphasized the beachfront design as a major attraction for tourists.
Recent efforts to improve tourism access have paid off. Direct flights and new markets helped increase visitors by 9% during the 2024 Khareef season and 18% in winter. The Salalah tourism project promises integrated facilities and stronger public-private cooperation. With construction underway, the project signals major progress for Dhofar’s growing tourism economy.
