The UAE strengthens its BRICS ties as Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed held talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The meeting took place during the 17th BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro. Sheikh Khaled attended the summit on behalf of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed. This summit runs over two days, starting Sunday.
During the meeting, Sheikh Khaled highlighted the UAE’s pride in its strategic relationship with Brazil. He emphasized decades of cooperation, mutual respect, and shared interests between the two nations. The talks also reflected the UAE’s commitment to deepening ties within the BRICS bloc.
The UAE delegation included several top officials. These were Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation; Dr. Thani Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade; and Ahmed Al Sayegh, Minister of State. Also present were Saif Saeed Ghobash, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council; Maryam Al Mheiri, Chairperson of the Abu Dhabi Media Office; Saeed Al Hajeri, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Economic and Trade Affairs; and Saleh Al Suwaidi, UAE ambassador to Brazil.
The UAE joined the BRICS group in January 2024. It is part of an expanded bloc including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iran, and Ethiopia. This membership reflects the UAE’s focus on dialogue and multilateral cooperation. Through BRICS, the UAE promotes peace, security, and sustainable development. It engages with emerging economies to boost global influence and economic ties.
The original BRICS founding members included Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. These countries formed the group to enhance cooperation among emerging economies. With the UAE’s recent inclusion, the bloc now represents an even broader range of regions and interests.
