Yazidi Survivor Shares ISIS Ordeal to Raise Awareness and Prevent Future Atrocities

Yazidi survivor Sipan Khalil has shared her story of captivity under ISIS to show why raising awareness is crucial. She wants the world to understand the dangers of terrorism and prevent similar atrocities. Khalil endured seven years of abuse after ISIS attacked her village, Kocho, in 2014.

During the attack, ISIS killed her father, brother, and many family members. They also abducted dozens of women and children. Khalil said that being held by senior ISIS leaders and in the home of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s wife exposed her to constant fear.

She described repeated assaults and threats. “They harmed many young girls, not just me. Terrorism against women left deep scars,” Khalil said. She also documented crimes in a notebook, which caused ISIS to isolate her in darkness for a week.

After Kurdish-led forces defeated ISIS and the US-led coalition, traffickers tried to sell her. A bomb near their car killed her captor, saving her life. A local family then helped her safely return to Iraq.

Now living in Germany, Khalil studies and works with the Farida Organization to support Yazidi survivors. She also cares for her surviving siblings. Khalil said that raising awareness is vital to ensure these crimes do not repeat.

She linked her experiences to recent attacks on Kurds in Aleppo. “These events remind us of the 2014 Yazidi genocide. Without international action, such assaults may happen again,” she said.

Khalil continues speaking publicly across Germany. She shares her story at conferences and events to educate people about ISIS crimes. She emphasizes that raising awareness is the first step toward preventing future atrocities.

“The fight against terrorism is not over,” she said. “Every voice counts. Every effort to educate the public helps protect vulnerable communities.” Khalil’s message highlights the importance of vigilance, advocacy, and global cooperation.
