Yazidi Family Reunion Brings Joy After Years of Captivity

A Yazidi mother and her daughter finally returned home in Shingal after over 11 years of captivity, marking a moving Yazidi family reunion. This long-awaited moment highlights both the resilience of survivors and the ongoing need for support and justice. Furthermore, the reunion reflects the broader efforts to rescue and reintegrate Yazidi women and children displaced by ISIS. Clearly, the Yazidi family reunion symbolizes hope and recovery for the community.

The mother, Suad Kh., shared her story of displacement and survival. She explained that ISIS abducted her in Shingal in 2014. After spending three years in Syria, she moved to Turkey, where she remained confined for nine years and could not leave her home. Additionally, her daughter spoke only Arabic under their captors’ orders, losing connection with her Kurdish roots.

Suad contacted her family about ten days before rescuers brought her home. The mother and daughter reunited with relatives, who expressed immense joy and relief. Abdullah Shrem, her husband, described the reunion as a dreamlike experience, filled with happiness and hope.

Despite the joy, the family still searches for other members. Suad’s mother said one daughter, four cousins, and an aunt remain missing. This reality emphasizes the continuing struggle for Yazidi families seeking closure and recovery after the ISIS attacks in 2014.

ISIS abducted more than 6,400 Yazidi women and children during its Shingal offensive. Rescuers have returned over 3,500 survivors to their families, but nearly 2,500 still remain missing. Many survivors escaped from al-Hol camp in northeast Syria, while others fled rebel-held areas, Turkish-backed groups, or resettled in third countries.

The Yazidi family reunion shows the courage and resilience of survivors and highlights the need for continued humanitarian and legal support. It also reminds the world of the challenges that remain for the Yazidi community. Importantly, the reunion inspires hope that more families will reunite and reclaim lives disrupted by conflict and oppression.

This story illustrates that recovery and justice require ongoing effort, and each successful reunion strengthens Yazidi communities in Shingal and beyond.
