US Strengthens Ties with Kurdistan Region and Peshmerga

Admiral Brad Cooper, the new commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), visited Erbil during his first tour of the region. He met with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. The discussions focused on regional security, cooperation against ISIS, and the strong support for the Peshmerga.

During the meeting, both sides stressed the importance of continued U.S. assistance. They highlighted how training, equipment, and reforms have strengthened the Peshmerga. Admiral Cooper praised the Kurdistan Region as a dependable ally and emphasized America’s ongoing role. He stated that the United States remains committed to ensuring stability and security. This message underlined Washington’s long-term support for the Peshmerga.

The Kurdistan Region has served on the frontline of the war against ISIS since 2014. Peshmerga forces, with backing from coalition troops, pushed back militants and defended vulnerable areas. Although ISIS lost its territorial control in 2017, insurgent groups remain active in remote locations. These threats make strong cooperation essential. Therefore, U.S. engagement continues to play a crucial role in preventing a resurgence.

Furthermore, Admiral Cooper’s visit demonstrated renewed attention from CENTCOM leadership. Such visits not only reaffirm alliances but also strengthen trust between American and Kurdish forces. Ongoing reforms aim to unify the Peshmerga under the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs, making them more effective. The United States continues to assist with these reforms to ensure lasting improvements.

Moreover, Washington’s actions reflect broader regional goals. By enhancing cooperation between Iraqi and Kurdish forces, the U.S. hopes to build long-term stability. This approach helps secure local communities, prevents future crises, and maintains peace across the Middle East. U.S. officials consistently describe Kurdistan as a reliable partner. This acknowledgment reinforces the significance of support for the Peshmerga.

Ultimately, the CENTCOM commander’s visit highlighted enduring commitments. The alliance between the United States and Kurdistan demonstrates shared goals in fighting terrorism and protecting regional stability. As both sides reaffirm their cooperation, the message remains clear: strong partnerships ensure stronger security.
