UDC Wins Environmental Excellence Awards, Sets New Sustainability Standards

UDC wins awards and sets a powerful example for environmental stewardship in Qatar. United Development Company (UDC), the master developer of The Pearl and Gewan Islands, secured four out of six prestigious international awards at the Green World Awards 2025. The Green Organization hosted the event to celebrate global leaders in sustainability.

Importantly, UDC wins awards across multiple categories, reflecting its strong dedication to green practices. These accolades highlight the company’s commitment to Qatar National Vision 2030 and strengthen its role as a pioneer in integrated urban development.

Moreover, UDC’s inclusion in the World Green Book underlines its achievements in creating smart, eco-friendly communities.

In the Energy Management category, Gewan Island earned the Gold Award. UDC’s innovative efforts aim to cut carbon emissions by almost 12% by 2026. To achieve this, UDC is switching to renewable energy and using efficient centralized cooling systems. As a result, the island has avoided 1,769 tons of CO2 emissions, equal to planting over 29,000 trees in ten years.

Additionally, UDC secured the Silver Award in Corporate Social Responsibility for The Pearl Island. The company integrates CSR principles deeply into its operations, focusing on environmental protection and community well-being. UDC’s approach promotes social equity, environmental stewardship, and ethical governance, shaping a more sustainable and inclusive future.

In the Pollution & Emission Control category, Gewan Island earned the Bronze Award. UDC’s initiatives include reducing plastic waste, recycling e-waste, and improving waste management practices. Through these efforts, UDC has collected over 3,000 kg of waste from The Pearl marinas using Seabin and Collec’Thor Sea Cleaners.

Furthermore, UDC holds a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest pneumatic waste collection system, stretching 66 kilometers and featuring over 500 inlets.

In Water Management, the Pearl Island received the Bronze Award. UDC uses Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) and advanced desalination technologies to conserve water. These systems have saved more than 21 million cubic meters of fresh water so far. In addition, public attractions like The Pearl Fountain, Duck Lake, and Beach Centrale feature sustainable water designs.

Yasser Al Jaidah, UDC President and CEO, expressed pride in these global recognitions. He noted that UDC wins because of its unwavering focus on sustainability and smart urban development. He praised the collective efforts behind these achievements and reaffirmed the company’s drive to support both people and the planet.

Ultimately, UDC wins awards that showcase its leading role in advancing sustainability in Qatar. These honors also reinforce Qatar’s position as a regional hub for sustainable urban development and environmental innovation.
