Doha, Qatar: The Tobacco Control Centre at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is encouraging smokers to use the holy month of Ramadan as an opportunity to quit smoking permanently.
Dr. Ahmed Al Mulla, Director of the Tobacco Control Centre and a WHO collaborator on tobacco dependence treatment, emphasized that fasting helps smokers break their addiction to nicotine. It fosters self-discipline and reduces dependence on tobacco products.
He noted that the centre sees a significant rise in smokers attempting to quit during Ramadan. Behavioral and medicinal therapies greatly increase the likelihood of success in quitting permanently.
Dr. Jamal Bashi, a smoking cessation specialist, advised smokers to avoid triggers like stimulants and smoking-friendly environments. He recommended engaging in social and religious activities, drinking plenty of water, using sugar-free gum in the evening, and using miswak during fasting hours.
He also highlighted that withdrawal symptoms typically appear only in the first week of Ramadan. These symptoms are manageable without medical intervention for most smokers. However, the Tobacco Control Centre provides medical support for those struggling to quit.
Dr. Bashi warned against harmful smoking behaviors during Ramadan, such as heavy smoking after breaking the fast. This can spike blood pressure and increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Additionally, smoking more in the evening deepens nicotine dependence, making it harder to quit after Ramadan.
Dr. Al Mulla outlined the centre’s extensive range of treatment options, including behavioral therapy, medication, and laser therapy. Since its establishment, the centre has helped thousands of smokers quit. This has reduced the health and economic burden on individuals and the healthcare system.
The centre urges anyone looking to quit smoking to take advantage of its services during Ramadan. Appointments can be booked by calling 40254981 or 50800959.
