Supporting the Lebanese Army is Key Focus of Kuwaiti-Lebanese Defense Talks

Lebanese Defense Minister Michel Menassa concluded his official visit to Kuwait. He emphasized a crucial priority during his meetings. Supporting the Lebanese army was the main focus throughout his talks. This support aims to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701. The resolution mandates state monopoly on weapons across Lebanon. Menassa spoke to KUNA on Wednesday about this goal.

Furthermore, he explained the army’s current challenges. Implementing this resolution requires extensive resources. It also needs significant equipment. The Lebanese army currently lacks these necessities. The Lebanese cabinet has adopted a specific plan. This plan will confine weapons to the state. It applies to southern Lebanon and the entire country. The goal is removing weapons from armed groups.

Moreover, President Joseph Aoun is actively seeking support. He visits Arab and European countries frequently. Gulf countries are particularly important destinations. These efforts aim to secure essential army support. Menassa praised Kuwait’s deep-rooted relationship with Lebanon. He recalled Kuwait’s support during wars and crises. Kuwait was the first to help Lebanon in political ordeals. It also provided humanitarian assistance consistently.

Additionally, Menassa highlighted Lebanon’s historical stance. Lebanon was the first Arab country to condemn the 1990 Iraqi invasion. Kuwaitis still remember this supportive position. The minister described his Kuwaiti talks as positive and constructive. Officials expressed readiness to help Lebanon’s government. They also committed to supporting the Lebanese army directly. Discussions covered follow-ups to previous agreements.

On tourism, Menassa mentioned ongoing efforts. Lebanon wants to restore its regional destination status. Security measures have enhanced significantly recently. Improvements are noticeable from the airport to neighborhoods. Visitors can see clear changes already. Reconstruction was not discussed during this visit. The focus remained solely on military support. Menassa expressed confidence in future Arab assistance.

Finally, he thanked Kuwaiti leadership for their hospitality. This included HH the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. He also thanked HH the Crown Prince and HH the Prime Minister. First Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Al-Yousef Al-Sabah received special mention. Defense Minister Sheikh Abdullah Al-Ali Al-Sabah was also acknowledged. Earlier, Sheikh Fahad discussed mutual cooperation with Menassa. He stressed enhancing coordination and expertise exchange. Supporting the Lebanese army remains essential for regional stability.
