Strategic Partnership Strengthens Iraq-U.S. Security Cooperation

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth discussed the strategic partnership between Iraq and the United States in a phone call on Sunday. Both leaders emphasized their shared commitment to regional security and stability.

During the conversation, Hegseth provided updates on military operations in Yemen. He stated that the United States would continue its actions unless Houthi attacks on American forces and Red Sea navigation stopped. However, he assured that Washington does not seek escalation and will halt military operations once the attacks cease.

Al-Sudani stressed that diplomacy and dialogue are the best solutions for crises in the Middle East. He reaffirmed Iraq’s consistent approach to handling regional challenges, emphasizing that Iraq remains committed to peaceful conflict resolution.

Both leaders highlighted the importance of continued security cooperation within the international coalition against ISIS. They also reviewed recent security developments in the region. Al-Sudani reiterated Iraq’s commitment to protecting coalition advisors stationed in the country, who are there at the government’s request to support counterterrorism efforts. Additionally, he emphasized that Iraq is dedicated to ensuring that the use of force remains solely under state control to maintain internal stability.

The discussion also covered the ongoing fight against terrorism. Both sides reaffirmed their joint efforts to prevent the resurgence of extremist threats, including ISIS. They acknowledged recent successes in targeting and eliminating senior ISIS leaders and stressed the need for a coordinated strategy to prevent the group from rebuilding its capabilities.

Regional security dynamics, particularly in Syria, were another key topic. The two leaders expressed concerns over ISIS acquiring new weapons and attempting to regroup. They emphasized that an international collective response is necessary to prevent further escalation and safeguard stability.

As the call concluded, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining strategic partnership efforts. Hegseth reiterated U.S. support for Iraq’s long-term security and stability. They agreed on the importance of ongoing dialogue and collaboration to strengthen mutual interests and sustain peace in the region.

Through enhanced security coordination and diplomatic engagement, Iraq and the United States continue to prioritize their strategic partnership to address regional challenges effectively.
