Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) recently launched the Space Accelerators Program. This strategic initiative aims to boost Omani startups by supporting the development of advanced space-related solutions and services. The Space Accelerators Program seeks to foster innovation and entrepreneurship in the growing space sector while attracting investment in cutting-edge technologies.
This program forms a vital part of the Ministry’s wider national space policy and executive plan. It targets key goals like economic diversification and capacity building. Importantly, it focuses on transferring and localizing space technologies through national organizations. The year-long initiative will be run by Phoenix Space and Technology Company alongside the UK-based Exotopic, experts in accelerator programs.
The Space Accelerators Program will select ten local startups within the space industry. These startups will receive support to develop prototypes or commercially viable tech solutions. Additionally, the program aims to improve national skills in space innovation. It also plans to build a strong network of local and global partners to back entrepreneurs in the space field.
Dr. Saud bin Hamoud Al Shaaili, Director General of Policies and Governance and Head of the National Space Program, highlighted the program’s significance. He explained it is a dedicated national effort designed to accelerate local space startups. Dr. Al Shaaili stated the initiative will provide technical guidance, entrepreneurial training, and access to valuable partners and experts. This support will help create a high-value, innovation-driven space industry in Oman.
Moreover, Dr. Al Shaaili noted that the program encourages competition and innovative ideas. The top three startups will receive incentive prizes to help establish sustainable businesses. These prizes align with the strategic vision for Oman’s space sector.
The Space Accelerators Program covers many areas, including communications, Earth observation, geospatial analytics, navigation, drones, AI and machine learning, advanced computing, data storage, IoT, spacecraft simulation, startup acceleration, and tech innovation. Overall, this initiative sets the stage for Oman to become a hub of space technology development and entrepreneurship.
