Smart Glasses Blind: Revolutionary Navigation for the Visually Impaired

At GITEX Global 2025 in Dubai, Romanian startup .lumen won the Healthtech Pitch Competition. The company received $10,000 for its smart glasses blind system. This innovation could change how visually impaired people move in cities.

Founded by Cornel Amariei, .lumen creates devices inspired by his family’s experience with disabilities. He wanted to develop a wearable that guides users like a traditional guide dog. The smart glasses blind system allows people to move safely without a white cane.

The glasses use AI, computer vision, LiDAR, and infrared sensors to detect obstacles and map safe routes. Haptic feedback on the forehead sends vibrations to guide users’ movements. This helps them avoid obstacles and navigate paths confidently.

During the GITEX demonstration, users moved through busy areas safely. Experts praised the smart glasses blind for combining independence, safety, and ease of use. They noted the system could improve daily life for the visually impaired.

The device builds on technology used in self-driving cars. It shows how autonomous systems can assist pedestrians, not just vehicles. .lumen plans to expand sensor coverage and improve haptic guidance for better navigation.

Observers say smart glasses blind could lower barriers to urban mobility. The device also promotes inclusion and independence for people with vision loss. It may inspire more AI-based assistive tools worldwide.

The startup aims to scale production, conduct wider tests, and collaborate with accessibility groups. If successful, the glasses could help millions travel safely and independently.

Recognition at GITEX highlights how startups can turn AI into practical, life-changing solutions for real-world challenges.
