Saudi artist Lulua Alyahya’s solo exhibition, “Nafs,” is currently being showcased at Jeddah’s Athr Gallery until March 25. This marks Alyahya’s first solo presentation in her home country, adding a personal touch to her artistic journey. She describes the title “Nafs,” which translates to “self,” as a fitting reflection of the work’s deep introspection and exploration of identity.
Alyahya, a graduate of Slade School of Fine Art and Goldsmiths, University of London, is known for blending personal stories with collective experiences. Her paintings focus on minimalism while exploring broader themes of self-discovery. Through this exhibition, Alyahya aims to offer viewers a chance to reflect on their own identities and experiences.
Her latest works are defined by their dark tones and undefined backgrounds, all primed with black gesso. This process is intuitive, and the paintings convey a sense of mystery and contemplation. Alyahya notes that discussing her work isn’t easy for her. She prefers that viewers experience the pieces firsthand and find connections to their own lives. According to the artist, the title “Nafs” is meant to allow people to see themselves in the art, making it a shared journey of self-exploration.
The works in this exhibit are deeply connected to Alyahya’s personal background and the cultural landscape of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf. Despite having exhibited extensively in the UK, this show represents a significant return to her roots, with each piece carrying a unique meaning that resonates with her Saudi heritage.
