Saudi Arabia Launches Project to Restore Degraded Lands

RIYADH: The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification has initiated a project to assess and rehabilitate degraded lands in Saudi Arabia’s western and southern regions, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

The project will focus on Makkah, Madinah, Baha, Asir, Jazan, and Najran, using advanced technology, remote sensing, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to identify degradation causes and develop tailored restoration plans.

Key Highlights:

• Short-, medium-, and long-term strategies aligned with global standards.

• Field and lab analyses of soil, vegetation, and water to guide rehabilitation efforts.

• Economic and social assessments to ensure sustainable land recovery.

By implementing internationally recognized restoration methods, the initiative aims to combat desertification and enhance environmental sustainability across the Kingdom.
