Saudi Arabia is intensifying efforts to secure its skies as it enters talks with Ukraine to purchase interceptor drones. The deal, if finalized, would strengthen the Kingdom’s ability to counter Iranian Shahed strike drones.
According to sources, Saudi officials are reviewing Ukraine’s specialized drone interception systems alongside electronic warfare tools. These measures aim to enhance air defense capabilities and protect critical sites against increasing regional threats.
Ukraine has emerged as a leading provider of counter-drone technology, having gained practical experience during the ongoing conflict within its borders. Observers note that the Kingdom’s interest reflects a trend, as several Middle Eastern countries study Ukraine’s expertise in this area. Representatives from Qatar, for example, recently visited Ukraine to learn firsthand about interception systems, training protocols, and electronic warfare solutions.
President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine has received 11 requests for assistance from countries neighboring Iran, European states, and the United States. These nations are seeking Ukraine’s knowledge in intercepting drones, deploying electronic countermeasures, and training personnel to strengthen security infrastructure.
In a related development, Ukraine dispatched a team of specialists along with interceptor drones to Jordan on March 9. The team is assisting U.S. military bases in defending against Iranian drone attacks, following a formal request from Washington. Experts expect that these operations will demonstrate the effectiveness of Ukrainian counter-drone technology while ensuring regional stability.
Saudi Arabia is also reportedly considering acquiring Ukrainian electronic warfare systems to supplement its interceptor drones. Officials emphasized that combining drones with advanced electronic warfare will significantly enhance the Kingdom’s defense posture.
Defense analysts highlight that these measures are strategically vital amid heightened tensions between Iran, Israel, and the United States. They note that interceptor drones provide not only immediate protection but also a platform for future integration of advanced surveillance and rapid-response systems.
With ongoing consultations between Saudi and Ukrainian officials, the Kingdom aims to finalize agreements that ensure its critical infrastructure remains secure. The successful deployment of interceptor drones could also serve as a model for regional partners seeking similar defense solutions.
