Riyadh Leads Saudi Cities in POS Transactions with Billions Spent in One Week

Saudi Arabia recorded strong consumer activity last week, with Riyadh topping the list of cities for point-of-sale (POS) transactions. Data showed that residents and visitors in the capital spent 5.4 billion riyals through POS systems, reflecting the city’s position as the Kingdom’s commercial hub.

Jeddah followed in second place with spending exceeding 2.1 billion riyals. Dammam ranked third, recording 771.7 million riyals. Together, the three cities accounted for a significant share of national POS activity, highlighting the economic strength of Saudi Arabia’s largest urban centers.

Other major cities also posted notable spending figures. Medina recorded 624.3 million riyals, while Mecca registered 610.9 million riyals. Khobar saw transactions worth 441.4 million riyals, and Taif followed closely with 412.9 million riyals. Tabuk contributed 306.7 million riyals in spending during the same period.

Smaller cities also showed meaningful levels of consumer activity. Abha recorded 221 million riyals, while Al-Baha logged 74.6 million riyals. Analysts explained that these numbers underscore the growing role of regional cities in supporting the Kingdom’s retail and service sectors.

Economists noted that the high volume of POS transactions reflects strong consumer confidence and the continued adoption of digital payments across Saudi Arabia. They emphasized that ongoing efforts to expand electronic payment infrastructure are encouraging more people to shift away from cash.

The surge in POS transactions also aligns with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goals, which aim to create a cashless society and strengthen the digital economy. Experts added that the widespread use of digital transactions contributes to transparency, efficiency, and growth in retail markets.

Overall, the data demonstrates the rapid pace of digital transformation in Saudi Arabia’s financial landscape. Riyadh’s dominance in spending highlights the capital’s economic vitality, while the steady contributions from other cities confirm a nationwide shift toward modern payment solutions.
