The second edition of the QCA Public Primary Schools Championship concluded recently with strong participation from across the country. It drew 280 students from 12 government schools. Organised by the Qatar Chess Association (QCA) under the “Naqla” project, the tournament showcased the growing enthusiasm for chess among young students.
Held in coordination with the Ministry of Sports and Youth and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the event featured five-round competitions for both boys’ and girls’ divisions. The QCA Public Primary Schools Championship aims to nurture young talent, encourage critical thinking, and promote chess as a developmental tool in early education.
QCA President Mohammed Al Mudahka praised the high level of student engagement. He noted that the initiative is part of the broader Chess in Schools project. “This championship supports our strategic goal of making chess accessible in public schools while identifying rising stars in the game,” Al Mudahka said.
Executive Director Hamad Al Tamimi echoed this sentiment, describing the QCA Public Primary Schools Championship as a milestone in the organisation’s youth outreach efforts. “The success of this edition reflects the fruitful partnership with both ministries,” Al Tamimi said. “We’re witnessing young players not only enjoying the game but also demonstrating a clear grasp of its strategic depth.”
Al Tamimi also highlighted the competitive nature of the matches. They revealed a number of promising talents expected to advance in future tournaments. He thanked the participating schools for their support and expressed optimism about expanding the program in coming years.
With its growing popularity and developmental focus, the QCA Public Primary Schools Championship continues to play a vital role in building a new generation of chess players in Qatar.
