QatarEnergy LNG celebrated young engineering talent by sponsoring and presenting the Best Overall Prizes at the 21st Annual Chemical Engineering Plant Design Competition. The event took place at Qatar University. It continues to inspire future engineers in Qatar.
Since its launch in 2004, this competition has provided students with hands-on engineering experience. Moreover, it supports QatarEnergy LNG’s mission to invest in local talent. This aligns with the goal to nurture innovation in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.
During the ceremony at QatarEnergy LNG’s Doha headquarters, Sheikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al-Thani, Chief Engineering and Projects Officer, and Dr. Mohammed Al-Marri, Head of Chemical Engineering at Qatar University, presented awards to the winners. Each team confidently showcased their plant design projects. They highlighted their creative solutions to real-world challenges.
In his opening remarks, Sheikh Khalid stressed QatarEnergy LNG’s dedication to education and talent development. Furthermore, he emphasized that empowering young engineers directly supports the future of the energy industry. By developing engineering talent, the company contributes to national progress and economic growth.
This year’s contest featured thirteen teams, including eight female groups and five male groups. Importantly, students demonstrated strong problem-solving skills and innovative thinking throughout the competition.
The judging panel included engineering experts from leading organizations in Qatar. For example, some judges were Dr. Lina Rueda from Qatar Shell GTL Limited and Mathew Swatton from Qatar Shell GTL Limited. Other judges included Jassim Sheikhan from QatarEnergy LNG, Awad Al-Yafei from QAFCO, Ahmed M Homssi from QChem, and Sarah Al-Raeesi from OryxGTL.
First place went to An’am Abunahia, Roumaissa Belhadj, Sajida Abel, and Noor Al-Najjar for their outstanding Qatari Acetic Acid (QATACID) Plant design. Meanwhile, the second-place award went to Ibrahim Yousef, Ibrahim Almomani, Sultan Al Jaber, and Ghaith Alqaisi. They were recognized for their creative Methanol Production Plant project.
Moreover, the event recognized advisors and faculty members who played vital roles in guiding the students. These included Dr. Fadwa Taher Eljack, Dr. Zeinab Abbas Jawad, and Eman Elhmoud, among others.
Ultimately, QatarEnergy LNG views this competition as a key platform for advancing engineering talent in Qatar. By fostering student creativity and determination, the company supports a new generation. This generation is ready to drive innovation and sustainability in the energy sector.
