Vienna – Qatar has called for stronger international action to place all Israeli nuclear facilities under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards. The country also urged Israel to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) as a non-nuclear state.
Qatar’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Vienna, HE Jassim Yacoub Al Hammadi, delivered this statement during an IAEA Board of Governors session. The discussion focused on the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories. It also addressed Israel’s nuclear capabilities.
Al Hammadi emphasized the importance of global institutions fulfilling their obligations under resolutions from the UN Security Council, UN General Assembly, IAEA, and the 1995 NPT Review Conference. These resolutions call on Israel to submit its nuclear facilities to IAEA oversight. They also urge Israel to join the NPT as a non-nuclear state.
He highlighted that every Middle Eastern nation, except Israel, is a signatory to the NPT and maintains safeguard agreements with the IAEA. Qatar reaffirmed its stance on nuclear transparency. The country urged the international community to push for compliance with non-proliferation agreements.
