Qatar Port Throughput Rises as Container Traffic Surges 16% in May

Qatar port throughput rises significantly as Hamad, Ruwais, and Doha ports record robust cargo growth in May 2025. Mwani Qatar announced that the ports handled increased volumes of containers, vessels, and other cargo types compared to May 2024.

Container throughput rose by 16% year-on-year. The ports managed 142,843 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in May alone. General and bulk cargo reached 174,398 tonnes. The ports also handled 6,783 RORO units and 80,396 heads of livestock, which contributed to the rising throughput.

Meanwhile, there was a noteworthy rise in the arrival of vessels, climbing by 21% compared to the same month last year. In total, 294 ships docked across the three ports. Building materials traffic surged by a massive 106% to reach 82,745 tonnes.

April 2025 showed similar strength. During that month, vessel arrivals increased by 22%. This growth was accompanied by an impressive container throughput, which jumped by 50%, while livestock and building material volumes rose 30% and 141% respectively.

Qatar port throughput rises as Hamad Port solidifies its position as a major hub in the Middle East. It continues to drive the country’s goal of economic diversification aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030.

State-of-the-art technologies and infrastructure contribute to Hamad Port’s growing capacity. These facilities support Qatar’s logistics sector by improving shipping efficiency and connectivity, thus boosting port throughput.

The port also helps position Qatar as a reliable trade partner. Its ability to handle the largest ships in the world makes it a regional cornerstone for maritime services, further enhancing the throughput.

In addition to cargo, Qatar’s cruise industry experienced strong growth. The 2024/2025 season saw 87 cruise ships, up 19% from the previous year. Among them, five ships made their first call to Doha, and 13 turnaround operations took place.

Cruise visitor numbers exceeded 360,000 this season. Over 10% were transfer passengers, proving Qatar’s rising influence in the cruise tourism market alongside the rise in port throughput.

Qatar port throughput rises not only in volume but in strategic importance, boosting the nation’s global logistics presence and regional leadership.
