Qatar Metabolic Institute Leads Fight Against Obesity with Specialized Care

DOHA – In recognition of World Obesity Day, Qatar Metabolic Institute (QMI) at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has reaffirmed its commitment to providing top-tier care for individuals with obesity. Through its National Obesity Treatment Centre (NOTC) and National Bariatric Centre (NBC), QMI offers comprehensive medical and surgical obesity management, addressing one of today’s most pressing health challenges.

Dr. Dabia Hamad Al Mohanadi, QMI Director, emphasized the serious health risks associated with obesity. “This chronic disease increases the likelihood of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even certain cancers. It can also impact bone health, reproduction, and daily activities such as movement and sleep,” she said.

Dr. Buthaina Alowinati, Director of NOTC, highlighted the need for a tailored, multidisciplinary approach. “Obesity is a complex condition that requires personalized care strategies. At NOTC, we focus on evidence-based treatments and holistic support to help patients achieve sustainable health improvements,” she stated.

With over 20,000 patient visits annually, NOTC stands as one of the region’s largest and most advanced obesity treatment centers. It integrates medical, nutritional, and behavioral therapies alongside cutting-edge interventional procedures, including endoscopic treatments and pharmacological interventions.

Dr. Moataz Basha, Director of NBC, underscored the role of surgery in obesity management. “Treatment depends on the severity of obesity and related complications. Surgery is the preferred option for patients with advanced obesity, while others may benefit more from medical interventions,” he explained.

Each year, around 1,000 patients undergo bariatric surgery at HMC. NBC provides interdisciplinary care using advanced laparoscopic, robotic, and minimally invasive techniques. The center also integrates research into its practice, continuously enhancing bariatric surgery outcomes.

Dr. Wahiba Elhag, Director of the Fellowship Program in Bariatric Medicine, stressed the importance of specialized care before and after bariatric procedures. “Patients need thorough preparation before surgery and follow-up for at least a year to prevent deficiencies and minimize the risk of weight regain,” she noted.

QMI offers several innovative programs, including specialized adolescent obesity care, an integrated wellness program, and a one-stop multidisciplinary clinic. Other initiatives focus on preoperative assessments, postoperative care, and long-term medical weight management for individuals with severe morbid obesity.

As obesity rates rise globally, QMI remains at the forefront of research and treatment, providing patients with advanced, patient-centered care to improve long-term health outcomes.
