Ooredoo Qatar has announced the deployment of Qatar’s first quantum-safe communications link, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to strengthen cybersecurity infrastructure against emerging digital threats.
The system was developed in collaboration with Hamad Bin Khalifa University and the Ministry of Defence, and is based on Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology. The approach uses principles of quantum mechanics to generate and exchange encryption keys, making any attempt at interception immediately detectable.
Unlike traditional encryption methods, which could be vulnerable to future advances in computing power, including quantum computers, the new system is designed to offer enhanced protection for sensitive communications.
According to Ooredoo officials, the project was integrated into the company’s operational network using existing fibre infrastructure, demonstrating its potential for real-world deployment beyond laboratory testing.
The initiative also involved international technology partner ID Quantique and is seen as part of broader efforts to develop scalable and secure digital systems within Qatar’s telecommunications sector.
Officials involved in the project said the development reflects growing investment in advanced cybersecurity tools aimed at protecting both civilian and strategic communications in the future.
