Philippine School Oman Celebrates 35 Years of Excellence

On February 21, 2025, Philippine School Oman (PSO) celebrated its 35th Founding Anniversary. The event followed the theme, “Celebrating Milestones and Envisioning the Future,” marking the school’s journey of delivering quality education in Oman. The Philippine Ambassador to Oman, Raul Hernandez, attended as the guest of honor and keynote speaker.

The celebration brought together key figures in PSO’s history. These included former Board of Trustees (BOT) members, Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) chairpersons, and educators who helped shape the school’s legacy. Special guests such as Ms. Carmelita de Jesus, Ms. Maria Carolina Layog, and Mrs. Ma. Eloisa San Jose even traveled from the Philippines to commemorate the school’s milestone.

The event kicked off with vibrant performances. The Grade 11 Marching Band electrified the audience. Next, Grade 6 students performed to the lively tune of “Galing Natin Ito.” Each grade level presented a cultural showcase, celebrating both Philippine and global heritage.

One of the most memorable moments was the Parade of Nations. Kindergarten students wore traditional attire, while Grade 10 students performed Singkil to honor the Maranao tribe. Other performances included Grade 5’s MassKara Festival and Grade 2’s celebration of Omani culture through dance. Grade 12’s Shadow Dance told the story of PSO’s journey and the lives of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

PSO’s 35th Foundation Day was made possible through the efforts of Mr. Mark Anthony Badion, Mrs. Magnolia V. Gabrielle, and the PSO Day core committee. They began planning for the event in April 2024, ensuring it was memorable. The event also benefited from the support of the PS Board of Trustees, PTA, and PSO faculty and staff, led by Principal Mr. Michael B. Joves.

The history of Philippine School Oman began in 1989. It was founded by Filipino Overseas Workers (OFWs) to ensure their children could access quality education. His Excellency Essa bin Mohammed Al Zedjali, the Philippine Honorary Consul General, played a key role in the school’s establishment. Philippine School Oman originally started in Al Wattayah as the Philippine Community School (PCS), offering education to just 38 students.

In 1995, after meeting educational standards and receiving government recognition, PCS became Philippine School Oman. The school moved to Al Khuwair Heights in 2007 due to increasing demand.

Today, PSO serves nearly 1,000 students. The school also plays an essential role in the local community by supporting Filipino professionals. By offering quality education to their children, PSO enables parents to focus on their careers. Furthermore, PSO continues to foster cultural exchange, celebrating Filipino heritage through events like Independence Day and cultural festivals.

Philippine School Oman also plays a significant part in strengthening ties between the Philippines and Oman. PSO alumni often go on to engage in trade and business between the two nations, helping to improve their economic relationships. Additionally, PSO ensures that students can transition smoothly to further education, whether in the Philippines or elsewhere.

In conclusion, Philippine School Oman’s 35th Founding Anniversary celebrated not only its rich history but also its commitment to future generations. The school will continue to uphold its mission of providing quality education while strengthening cultural and economic ties between the Philippines and Oman. Happy 35th Anniversary, Philippine School Oman!
