Oman-China Science Ties Deepen

Oman is strengthening its global scientific ties through its participation in the 2nd Belt and Road Conference on Science and Technology Exchange. The event, held in China, brings together nations to foster research and innovation. Dr. Rahma Ibrahim Al Mahrouqi, Oman’s Minister of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation, leads the delegation. In her speech, she praised the Belt and Road Initiative for building strong international scientific alliances. She also emphasized Oman-China science cooperation as a key element of the country’s Vision 2040 goals.

Dr. Rahma detailed Oman’s progress since joining the initiative, citing a memorandum signed to promote science and tech collaboration. That agreement launched joint programs between Omani and Chinese universities, including smart campus initiatives. Furthermore, Oman has expanded cooperation with Chinese firms, such as Huawei, to support digital and scientific advancement. The collaboration also includes academic exchanges and mutual language instruction efforts. This foundation has firmly rooted Oman-China science cooperation within wider cultural and academic exchange.

Alongside the conference, Dr. Rahma met with Chinese Vice Minister of Science and Technology Lin Xin. The two officials explored new cooperation areas including environmental research, artificial intelligence, and traditional medicine. They also focused on food security, health sciences, and biodiversity. Discussions extended to oceanography and genetics, while both sides agreed to attend key science conferences. They further discussed boosting mutual recognition of academic degrees and expanding bilingual education initiatives.

While in Chengdu, the minister visited Sichuan University to build new academic partnerships. She explored joint projects in the arts, AI, and smart technologies with university leaders. Talks also included support for young researchers and exhibitions featuring student innovation. The visit highlighted opportunities for Omani private institutions to link with China’s academic sector. These steps underscore a deeper phase in Oman-China science cooperation, now moving beyond policy into practical implementation.

Looking ahead, Oman intends to deepen research collaboration and cultural ties with China. The focus remains on shared scientific priorities and global challenges. Future exchanges will include conferences, student mobility, and expanded research access. As Vision 2040 advances, Oman sees partnerships like this as critical for economic and technological transformation. Through sustained Oman-China science cooperation, the Sultanate aims to become a regional innovation leader.
