Oman champions inclusive rights at global disabilities forum

Oman took a leading step this week in advancing inclusive rights for persons with disabilities. The country participated in the 18th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This high-level event took place from 10 to 12 June at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Oman sent an official delegation led by Ambassador Omar Said Al Kathiri, its Permanent Representative to the UN. Officials from the Ministry of Social Development and Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs joined him.

Badr Fareesh Al Yahyaee, representing the Ministry of Social Development, addressed the conference with a strong message. He emphasized Oman’s serious commitment to inclusive rights for persons with disabilities. He noted that these efforts align with Oman Vision 2040 and the country’s Basic Law. The speech also referenced Oman’s alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals and other global conventions. The country’s national strategy reflects both local legislation and international obligations.

Oman detailed recent achievements in promoting accessible and inclusive communities. Officials have drafted a law specifically focused on the rights of persons with disabilities. This law draws directly from the UN convention’s principles and standards. Moreover, Oman created a national guide for inclusive urban planning and transportation access. These measures represent key pillars in Oman’s broader social reform efforts.

Oman also organized the first-ever National Forum for Persons with Disabilities in 2023. This forum provided a platform for direct dialogue and strategic planning. It led to the formation of a dedicated lab to enhance programs and services. Officials described the forum as a turning point in driving inclusive rights for persons with disabilities. Since then, new partnerships and initiatives have emerged across various ministries.

Finally, Oman urged global collaboration and awareness as vital tools for progress. Officials called for collective responsibility in upholding the dignity and rights of all persons. They also encouraged the full involvement of people with disabilities in shaping policy. Oman stressed the need for unified global visions and shared commitments. The country reaffirmed its dedication to expanding inclusive rights for persons with disabilities.
