Oman strengthens agriculture with new flood protection walls as part of a major effort to safeguard farmland and improve climate resilience.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources recently completed a 150-metre flood protection wall in Al Buwayridah, Wilayat of Yanqul, A’Dhahirah Governorate. This wall, standing three metres high, is built to withstand seasonal wadi flows and reduce soil erosion. Officials emphasized that the project reflects Oman’s commitment to protecting agricultural land while supporting rural communities.
Meanwhile, construction continues on a second flood protection wall in the Al Bilad–Al Madam area. The wall has reached 30 percent completion so far. When finished, it will stretch 1,700 metres and stand three metres tall, significantly boosting flood resilience for surrounding farmland. Both projects are designed according to approved engineering standards to ensure long-term durability and effectiveness.
Community involvement has been key to these initiatives. Local residents contributed 80 percent of the total cost, while the ministry funded the remaining 20 percent. This partnership underscores a shared commitment to protect agricultural assets and strengthen local infrastructure. Through these efforts, Oman strengthens agriculture and safeguards the livelihoods of farming families.
Officials also highlighted that the flood walls form part of a broader programme aimed at mitigating the impact of seasonal floods. The programme includes monitoring soil erosion, protecting critical farmlands, and improving water management in vulnerable areas. The projects showcase Oman’s focus on practical, ground-level solutions to address climate challenges and support sustainable agriculture.
By combining government support with local community contributions, Oman strengthens agriculture while fostering a sense of shared responsibility. These projects provide a blueprint for similar initiatives in other regions facing climate-related risks. The ministry plans to build additional flood protection walls in other governorates to extend coverage and secure agricultural zones.
The initiative also contributes to climate resilience, ensuring farmland and rural communities can withstand increasingly frequent extreme weather events. Oman strengthens agriculture through infrastructure development, community collaboration, and forward-looking planning.
