Nouri al-Maliki Stresses Need for Strong US Ties While Defending Iraq’s Iran Relations

Former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki stated that strong relations with the United States remain essential for his country’s development. He made these comments during an interview on Monday in Baghdad. Maliki also took the opportunity to defend Iraq’s longstanding ties with Iran. His remarks arrive at a time of heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran. The former leader seeks to position Iraq as a balanced diplomatic partner.

Maliki explicitly rejected any claims that his previous tenure strained American relations. He served as prime minister from 2006 until 2014. Therefore, during those years, the United States maintained a significant military presence in Iraq. Maliki insists his government cooperated fully with American officials. He now believes that progress depends on continued cooperation with Washington.

The former premier described Iraq’s relationship with Iran as one based on shared interests. He emphasized that Tehran must respect Iraq’s sovereignty in all matters. Furthermore, this balancing act reflects Iraq’s delicate position between two adversarial powers. Maliki wants to maintain friendships with both nations simultaneously. His comments aim to reassure each side about his intentions.

Regional tensions have escalated significantly in recent weeks. The United States and Iran recently engaged in indirect nuclear talks. Oman mediated this second round of discussions on Tuesday. A third round is now scheduled to take place in Geneva. However, the United States has also moved additional warships to the region. Iran responded by conducting military drills near strategic waterways.

President Donald Trump recently issued stark warnings to Iranian leaders. He threatened military action if negotiators fail to reach a nuclear deal. Trump described the potential consequences as very traumatic for Iran. He also set a specific timeline of ten to fifteen days. This deadline adds urgency to the ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Trump has also directly commented on Maliki’s political ambitions. The American president posted on Truth Social in late January. He described a potential third Maliki term as a very bad choice. Trump cited poverty and chaos during the former premier’s previous tenure. He warned that American assistance would cease if Maliki returns.

Maliki responded defiantly to these comments from the American president. He stated he has absolutely no intention of withdrawing his candidacy. This decision reflects his respect for Iraq’s sovereignty and national will. Maliki argued that no foreign leader can dictate voting choices. He insists this matter rests solely with the Iraqi people.

The former prime minister also addressed concerns about diplomatic security. He promised that Iraq would protect all foreign embassies within its borders. Maliki stated no party could target officially recognized diplomatic interests. This commitment directly addresses longstanding American security demands. The United States has frequently raised concerns about militia attacks.

Maliki expressed support for a state monopoly on military force. He believes an agreement with armed factions remains entirely possible. The former leader wants weapons concentrated in the hands of the state. He advocates for a centralized military under a single command. This position aligns with longstanding American policy goals for Iraq.

Washington has consistently accused Iran of undermining Iraqi sovereignty. American officials point to political proxies and military loyalists. They describe the Popular Mobilization Forces as a parallel military structure. These groups reportedly influence Iraq’s security policy from within. Some view Maliki as part of this network of Iranian influence.

Maliki remains optimistic about reaching an understanding with pro-Iran factions. He believes dialogue can succeed where force would certainly fail. The former prime minister rules out confrontations as a solution. He wants to build consensus through peaceful negotiations instead. This approach reflects his broader vision for Iraqi stability and progress.
