Kuwait’s Leading Role in Promoting Culture and Education: UNESCO’s Praise

By: Mohammad Al-Otaibi
PARIS, Feb 12 – UNESCO has reaffirmed Kuwait’s deserving status as the capital of Arab culture. They highlighted the country’s vital role in advancing education, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting global peace and prosperity.

In an interview, UNESCO Assistant Director-General Firmin Edouard Matoko praised Kuwait’s significant contributions to the development of culture and education across the Arab region. He emphasized Kuwait’s leadership in fostering both regional and international cooperation through a variety of initiatives. These initiatives aimed at advancing various sectors, including education, media, and freedom of expression.

Matoko underscored Kuwait’s strategic efforts in aligning regional and international initiatives with the UN’s objectives. These efforts are particularly focused on strengthening educational systems, protecting cultural heritage, and supporting media freedom. He mentioned Kuwait’s commitment to several key international conventions. These include the 1954 Hague Convention on cultural property protection, the 2001 Convention on Underwater Cultural Heritage, and the 1970 Convention aimed at preventing the illicit trade of cultural property.

Further, Matoko recognized Kuwait’s strong support in aiding the recovery efforts following the Beirut port explosions in 2020. Kuwait funded UNESCO activities in Beirut, facilitating the completion of a project aimed at reviving cultural life in affected communities. This initiative helped to restore creativity and cultural production in the midst of the ongoing reconstruction efforts in Lebanon.

Kuwait’s dedication to fostering educational opportunities for youth affected by crises was also highlighted. Between 2016 and 2021, Kuwait allocated USD five million to fund a UNESCO program. This program assisted nearly 4,000 refugee youth, enabling them to continue their secondary education. It covered their registration fees, provided educational materials, and promoted active engagement in their studies.

Matoko also emphasized the strong partnership between Kuwait and UNESCO. He noted that Kuwait has been a member of the organization since 1960. Kuwait’s permanent delegation and national commission have played an essential role in UNESCO’s global initiatives. The country’s commitment to international policy-making was further underscored when it was elected to the UNESCO Executive Board in 2021. Matoko stated that this election reflects Kuwait’s growing influence in UNESCO’s governance. It also shows its continued dedication to shaping global policies in line with the organization’s mandate.

Kuwait’s active support for regional cooperation was also demonstrated through its participation in UNESCO’s 2020 initiative to support the recovery of Beirut. Under the initiative, Kuwait contributed to mobilizing the education, culture, and media sectors to aid in the reconstruction of Lebanon’s capital.

Additionally, Matoko referenced the posthumous award granted to His Highness the late Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. This award recognized his pioneering efforts in empowering people with disabilities through digital technologies. This award further embodies Kuwait’s unwavering commitment to social inclusion. It highlights their dedication to supporting marginalized groups through innovation.

Kuwait’s ongoing collaboration with UNESCO highlights its key role in shaping global education, culture, and humanitarian efforts. They establish the nation as a leader in fostering international cooperation and advancing human development.
