Kuwait is poised for a significant energy shift, with renewable energy projects worth approximately one billion dinars on the horizon. Dr. Mahmoud Abdulaziz Mahmoud Bushehri, the Minister of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy, announced that renewable energy is expected to account for 30% of the country’s total energy production within the next four years. This is part of efforts to promote sustainability and reduce carbon emissions.
Speaking at the 24th meeting of the Regional Council for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency—held for the first time in Kuwait—Dr. Bushehri highlighted two major renewable energy initiatives. The first, in collaboration with China, is located in the Shagaya area and aims to generate 3,000 MW of energy. This will be done in phases three and four. The second project, a partnership with the Public-Private Partnership Authority, targets the generation of 2,700 MW. Both projects are expected to take two to two and a half years for implementation.
The meeting, attended by representatives from several Arab countries, focuses on finding a balance between traditional and renewable energy sources. The goal is to raise renewable energy contributions to 30%-50% of the total production. Discussions also revolve around energy efficiency across sectors like residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural. These sectors play a crucial role in reducing overall energy consumption.
In addition to expanding renewable energy, Bushehri emphasized the importance of energy efficiency. This is a step toward achieving carbon neutrality and combating climate change. As part of these efforts, Kuwait plans to foster direct investment in renewable energy. They will also localize modern technologies and train national experts in the sector.
The energy ministry also signed memoranda of understanding with private sector companies to support independent energy supply projects, including renewable energy initiatives. These companies will generate electricity, which will then be purchased by the ministry. This will further integrate private sector involvement in Kuwait’s renewable energy transformation.
